Lauren Watkins, White Oak Conservation Education Manager, will provide a discussion on “Conserving Florida’s Panthers: From Genetics to Rehabilitation“. The Florida panther (Puma concolor) is one of the most endangered large mammals in the world, with wild populations estimated to be less than 130 individuals in a restricted range in southern Florida. In partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission, White Oak Conservation works to rehabilitate injured or orphaned Florida panthers and return them to their homes in South Florida. White Oak also partners with the Southeastern Zoo Alliance for Reproductive Conservation to rescue gametes from killed or injured panthers to research the genetic diversity of their small population. Learn about White Oak’s efforts to conserve, protect, and promote the conservation of Florida’s largest cat. Click here to read more about this topic.
