November Is Manatee Awareness Month!

Celebrate Florida’s affable herbivores by learning and sharing information that can help protect these gentle creatures. As the West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) searches for warmer waters, keep an eye out for increased sightings. Seasonal protection laws went into place November 15, 2016, so please remember to keep your distance and go slow. The viewing guidelines and boater’s guide from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are helpful tools for understanding how to interact with them. Ninety-one manatees have died this year alone from boat strikes, so please do your part to help keep them safe. If you encounter an injured, sick or deceased manatee, call the FWC’s Wildlife alert hotline at 888-404-3922.
